Why Is Margarine Better For Baking Desserts?

With the whole ‘Butter versus margarine’ debate still raging (in some circles – we know which side our bread is margarined!) it’s important to look at the benefits of making the switch to margarine as a butter substitute in baking as there could be more to it than you think: margarine might not only be the lower fat option, but we think it’s the most versatile and tastiest choice too.

Many bakers choose to use margarine for baking because they swear that it makes the airiest sponges and the chewiest cookies that your family will love.

Using margarine also takes the stress out of cooking by making it less time-consuming and far easier to manage, because soft margarine is so satisfyingly spreadable, even straight from the fridge. You can get stuck straight in to your baking – whether it’s smooth pastries, rich desserts or tempting cookies without having to worry about warming it up or waiting for it to soften. That makes it perfect for quick toast on hurried mornings. It also lasts for ages in the fridge too, without losing any of its original freshness and still tasting just as fresh as when you first bought it.

Using margarine in baking has some great health benefits too. Again we have a lot to thank these plant oils for, because they are full of the good fats we need to include in our diets every day – such as omega 3 and 6. While desserts can still be our occasional. indulgent treat, we can relax a little, knowing that by using margarine for baking we’re cutting down on the bad saturated fats and reducing the infamous trans-fats down to a mere trace only. So maybe just one extra slice of that chocolate cake after all…

There are loads of margarine blends to choose from too – some especially designed for baking! There are even margarines which help to lower cholesterol by including plant sterols in their recipe, so it’s a great option if you’re watching your diet. The oils used in margarines can play a big part in their flavour too, so you can choose the one you like best. There are salt-free varieties and low-fat blends too, so something for every taste and every lifestyle choice.

But don’t take our word for it – there are loads of delicious recipes for using margarine in baking. Why not try some margarine-powered cookies, or surprise that ‘someone special’ on Valentine’s day with a romantic treat. There’s a dessert out there for all occasions too – creep out the kids with these Halloween favourites or just indulge your sweet tooth with these delicious chocolate and hazelnut brownies!
