What Countries Are in the Caribbean?

The Caribbean islands are among the top destination choices, particularly for those living in North America. It’s relatively close proximity to Canada and the United States, along with its glorious year-round weather, makes it the perfect vacation spot for solo travellers and families alike.

There has been a big push recently by tourism officials to promote the entire region as one single destination. There are at least 28 island nations in the Caribbean and more than 7,000 individual islands scattered nearby. Although the tourism industry would like to lump all of them into one category, each one has its own culture and unique offerings. No two Caribbean islands are alike. That’s why it’s no surprise that many of us love to visit the same island multiple times.

The tourism industry drives much of the Caribbean economy, with millions of residents depending on it for their livelihoods. Whether they’re working at one of the luxury resorts or running guided nature tours, no doubt our tourism dollars are certainly having an impact.

As mentioned earlier, there are a total of 28 island nations in the Caribbean, each with its own unique culture and atmosphere. But we’ve selected some of the best islands in the region, and have provided short descriptions of what each one has to offer.

Dominican Republic

The most visited island in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic is as versatile as it is eclectic. The island is known for its perfect mix of European, African and Native Indian cultures — all blending effortlessly and existing harmoniously. Meanwhile, foodies love visiting the Dominican Republic for its rich culinary delights!

Puerto Rico

They say it’s always sunny in Puerto Rico and the U.S. territory will certainly welcome you with a bright smile and open arms. This island is a hit with families because there is something for everyone to enjoy. White sandy beaches, tropical rain forests and majestic mountains will be loved by both kids and adults alike. The best time to go is from December to April.

Jamaica

When Jamaicans say “everything’s irie”, they truly mean it. Relaxation and good times trump all else when you’re vacationing in Jamaica. Whether you’re taking a stroll through one of the island’s beautiful plantations or chewing on a sugar cane under the shade, life is a breeze in the Land of Springs. And if you’re looking for a foodie’s delight, then Jamaican cuisine is to die for. Their famous dish known as ‘rice and peas’ is a huge hit with locals and tourists alike. And try the island’s national dish, Ackee and saltfish, while you’re at it!

Trinidad and Tobago

The tourism site for Trinidad and Tobago proudly declares “Two islands, two unique experiences” and they are certainly right. This island nation is known for its Carnival and festive vibes all year round. Surrounded by gorgeous beaches and waterfalls, this is certainly a traveller’s paradise like no other. Nature lovers will also love the region’s colourful sights, consisting of hundreds of species of flowers, birds and butterflies. Golf, hiking and kayaking are just some of the nation’s most popular pastimes!

Cuba

One of the Caribbean’s largest islands, Cuba is a popular choice for millions of tourists each year. With its gloriously good climate and pristine beaches, what more could you want out of a vacation? As of now, Canadian visitors make up the bulk of tourism arrivals in Cuba. With visitors from the UK not far behind. Due to America’s lack of diplomatic relations with the island, tourists from the United States still remain relatively low. Cuba is known for its Medical Tourism industry. North Americans often come to this island nation for its high-quality medical services at rock-bottom rates.

Haiti

This country still remains one of the poorest in the Americas and in the world. Haiti’s citizens are still reeling from the 7.0 magnitude quake that rocked the island in January 2010. Although tourism in Haiti has suffered due to political upheaval and devastating poverty, the port of Labadee remains popular. Labadee is a beautiful vacation villa located on the island’s northern coast and has been leased long term by international cruise operator, Royal Caribbean.
