Porto Rafael – The Perfect Sardinian Honeymoon Destination

In the demographics of visits to Sardinia, honeymoons are becoming increasingly popular. Perhaps it is the emerald waters that line the coastline, or the quaint little local towns that dot the interior that attract the visitors, but whatever it is, there is no denying the appeal of Sardinia. Honeymoons based here can be booked in several locations across the island, although most couples choose to be close to the beautiful coastal areas. If you book with one of the reputable travel companies on the market that specialises in honeymoons you will have a huge choice of location, accommodation and add-ons for your romantic getaway.

Porto Rafael – A Gem in Sardinia

Honeymoons in Porto Rafael will be nothing short of wonderful. This tiny port located in the commune of Palau is a stunning place where couples can really get lost in the tranquil atmosphere and the delightful way of life. Porto Rafael’s beaches have distinctly pinkish sand that is quite coarse to the touch, and lots of small rocks. These beaches are close to the village in the eastern part of the island’s headland. Characterised by granite rocks and azure blue waters, this place is a haven for those seeking a touch of romance.

The village’s Spanish name is due to to its founder, a Spanish Count named Rafael Neuville di Berlange. He began building here in 1962 and the lavish villas he created have given the area its exclusive reputation. Trips can be made along the coast on the taxi-boat service, but private boats can also be hired and tours taken to some of the surrounding islands.

The Spanish Count once lived in what is now the old city hall. On the façade of the house you can read the motto that inspired him: “Sognare e vivere” – translated as “Dreaming is living”. He was an eclectic man who loved art and enjoyed the finer things in life. Count Rafael even dedicated the pathway from the tiny church of St Rita to the patron saint of artists. This tiny pathway, beautifully laid out with local granite, leads to the ‘piazzetta’, which is the main town square. This square is beautifully designed and has the Italian and Spanish flags flying from the old city hall. Lovely views can be enjoyed from the square and there is a buzzing little cafe that makes a great place for a little relaxation.

Everywhere in this town there is evidence of the Count’s love of nature and his respect for its beauty. These elements are revealed through his architecture and planning and add to the character of the town. Because of the Count’s enduring philosophy, there has been no accommodating of mass tourism and all villas and properties have had to comply with the original rules and regulations he implemented. Houses are built in the eroded cliffs and are unobtrusive, authentic and entirely charming.

When it comes to Sardinia, honeymoons in this delightful island paradise will offer the best of everything Italy has to offer in every respect: romance, cuisine, history and spectacular landscapes – this island really does have it all.
