Hair Loss After Pregnancy: How To Prevent It

A new born brings a lot of happiness to a family. Although, the baby is usually a bundle of joy, having a newborn is usually tough. This is because you not only have to take care of another person in the house, but because as mother you tend to have many body changes. One of the most apparent body changes is hair loss.

Hair loss is brought about by hormonal changes. During pregnancy, your estrogen levels tend to go high. As a result of increase in estrogen levels, hair ceases to grow.

After giving birth, your body goes back to normal and your estrogen levels drop dramatically. This brings about increased shedding of hair; instead of shedding 100 hairs daily, you tend to lose up to 500 hairs which results to great hair loss.

Cure for hair loss after pregnancy

Although, it’s common for women to lose hair after pregnancy, there are a number of things that you can do to prevent the loss. Some of the things that you can do include:

Dieting: food is very important. You should remember that the food that you eat caters for both you and the baby; therefore, you should eat a healthy diet.

The food should include: fruits and vegetables. It should also contain minerals and antioxidants. Antioxidants are vital in the food as they protect hair follicles from damage (that may result as due to autoimmune disorders). Some of the excellent sources of antioxidants are blueberries, peppers, spinach, artichokes, and cranberries.

The food that you eat should also contain plenty of vitamins. Some of the essential vitamins that you should include in your diet are: vitamin B complex, Vitamin E and C. Some of the best sources of these vitamins are fruits and vegetables.

If you are finding it hard to find the above foods, it’s recommended that you take vitamin supplements. The good side is that you can easily find the supplements from many of your local stores. The only thing that you need to do is to ensure that you buy the supplements from reputable stores that won’t rip you off.

You should also ensure that you consult your doctor before taking the supplements.

Handle your hair carefully: the way that you handle your hair plays a vital role in preventing hair loss.

Here you need to practice good hair handling. One of the things that you should avoid is washing the hair with hot water. You should also ensure that you don’t comb the hair while wet.

Experts recommend that you should use strengthening shampoos. This is because shampoos contain biotin and silica which greatly improve hair strength. The shampoo also stimulates follicle growth.

Watch your hair styles: it’s recommended that you avoid hair styles that put a lot of pressure on your hair. One of the styles that you should avoid is the ponytail. This style puts a lot of pressure on the hair thus breaking it.

In addition to hair styles, you should also avoid heated styling tools such as hot rollers, curling irons, blow dryers, and flat irons.
