Prince George’s Royal Tour Packing List? We Have the Inside Scoop

Formal wear? check. Jewels loaned by the Queen? Check. Three weeks supply of diapers and mini sun hats? Check.

As if planning outfits for 45 different engagements wasn’t enough, the Duchess of Cambridge had to also work through a long list for baby Prince George as she and Prince William prepared for the family’s first overseas tour, starting April 7 in Wellington, New Zealand.

Fortunately for the royals, they have an orderly who helps coordinate travel arrangements including the packing of the huge silver-colored packing cases often used by the family.

So what will little George be wearing while traveling Down Under?

Lately Kate has been dressing him in khakis and sweaters – a navy one decorated with a Union Jack flag from Trotters (left) is a favorite – and with late summer weather around the corner in the two countries, we can expect similar.

We’ll probably also see lots of cute sun hats like the one he was seen wearing while vacationing on the Caribbean island of Mustique in January.

And of course, mum will also be taking stacks of diapers so new nanny Maria Borrallo won’t have to keep getting new supplies during the three week tour.

As well as Trotters (where her mum Carole and sister Pippa have also been spotted), Kate’s been picking up baby clothes at The White Company and Petit Bateau. She also likes to shop for basics at department store Peter Jones in Sloane Square.

On Monday, Kate finished up her baby shopping at the Gap in Kensington High Street, which is less than a minute’s drive from her home at Kensington Palace and the perfect place for some last minute items.

She chose a green checked bodysuit ($21.50), some denim shorts that set her back $25 and a pair of grey and navy striped cotton trousers for $15.

The haul was topped off with two navy and white striped onesies for $25 each.

As for Prince George’s playthings, insiders wonder if Kate will pack the soft toy version of the bilby gifted to the couple by the Australian Prime Minister at his birth last July.

It would go down well with the locals if he were to bring that out for public view. The couple is set to visit the bilby enclosure named for Prince George at Taronga Zoo in Sydney on Easter.

Overall, the couple are excited about their trip but we’re sure there’s some trepidation about how their 8-month-old will cope on the long flight, especially now that he’s more mobile.

Sarah Dixon, a maternity nurse from Nanny and Butler who has worked with friends of the royal couple, tells PEOPLE, “the logistics of traveling with a 9-month old are pretty extensive.”

“He’ll be crawling or at least wanting to stand. And they want constant attention at that age,” she explains.

“To make it a successful trip, he needs familiarity. For that amount of time away they will want to make it as less stressful as possible.

According to Dixon, the other major challenge the small family may face is maintaining Prince George’s sleep routine.

“If his sleep pattern is disturbed she could find herself up [a lot] in the night.”

But not to worry. Royal sources say the staff at the three official residences the royal family will be visiting are accustomed to meeting the needs of VIP guests, including babies.

And when Prince George and his parents stay at Government House in Canberra, Australia, he’ll have the added delight of hearing the sounds of cockatoos in the trees and be able to catch sight of the 36 kangaroos (many of whom are named after Shakespeare characters) which live on the grounds.

Kate, William and George leave for New Zealand on Saturday.
