Top 3 African Braid Styles

So many African hair braiding styles to choose from but you only have one head of hair. It’s easy to be tempted into getting braids of all styles. They can look so good, require little styling and even let you walk around with a piece of art on you. If you are thinking of installing them, it’s wise to know about the different styles that are available to you. Here are three top African braid styles to get you started with.

Box B

One of the trendiest of the lot, box braids have been popularly adorned by singer Solange Knowles and were followed later by older sister Beyoncé. The name of the African braid style comes from the way it is created, where hair is first sectioned into boxes of small, medium or large sizes. The boho chic hairstyle features individual braids that are made all the way down. Synthetic hair is also added to create voluminous, long braided hair, which is how the style looks its best.

Box braids are a popular choice of braid style for its versatility as well. It gives you the unique freedom of styling your hair that is otherwise not possible. You can style your hair in an elegant fishtail side-braid or tie up a creative topknot.

Also widely known as Poetic Justice, box braids were made iconic by Janet Jackson’s character in the early 90’s movie of the same name. Other celebrities who have famously fashioned it include Brandy, Keri Hilson and Christina Milian.

Micro Braids

Micro braids are tiny, delicate braids which, as a result, can take a long time to install. Hair is usually braided halfway, with the other half left to flow naturally. Hair with micro braids can be curled or straightened and will usually last longer than other styles.

It is not recommended for braids to be extremely thin as it can damage hair and cause breakage. Therefore, micro braids should be done only by those whose hair is healthy enough to withstand it. Also, remember not to keep your braids for longer than three months. One to two months should also pass before installing them again.

Cornrows

Worn by women, men and children alike, cornrows are a type of braid style that is created by elevating the braids from the scalp. Braided close to the scalp, they can be either simple rows or complex geometric designs. The latter accents the artistic nature of cornrows, which can offer anything from zigzags patterns to symbols. Beads or cowry shells can also be incorporated into the braids to enhance the look further.

Cornrows will take from an hour to three to complete, depending on the design’s complexity. If you wish to have them installed, you can normally find examples of cornrow designs from your hair braiding expert. However, most professionals will have the capacity to adapt your ideas into a unique cornrow hairstyle.

Whatever your hair length is, there is probably a braid style for you. However, not all hair types will be suitable for braiding. Be sure to check if your hair is strong enough before deciding on installing any African braid styles.
