How to Prevent Getting Itchy Skin From Pool Water

Itchy skin from pool water can be a downright torturous condition, because the itch just doesn’t seem to stop once it starts and it usually covers your whole body. Yet, somehow this problem simply isn’t enough to stop those who love to swim from diving right into the pool.

They’ll get into the swimming pool now and deal with the consequences later. That is, if the itch doesn’t happen to start soon after they enter the water! The itching, burning, utterly painful irritation and rash that can come from chlorinated pool water doesn’t even stop with your skin.

As if the skin reaction to chlorine wasn’t bad enough, there’s also the problems this chemical causes the eyes and the hair. Why, even the swimmer that doesn’t seem to have any ill effects from the chlorine in pool water still ends up with red eyes if they don’t wear swimming goggles in the water.

The same holds true whether they’re swimming in a pool, or relaxing in a chlorinated spa or hot tub. Surely there must be a solution – a way to protect the health of the body’s eyes, hair, and skin without giving up swimming altogether.

Why Does Swimming Pool Water Cause Itchy Skin Anyway?

Itchy skin from chlorine isn’t a phenomena limited to pool water. Have you ever happened to glance at the warning label on a bottle of bleach and noticed the part about the potential hazard that comes from getting bleach on skin?

So, what do you think the effect is supposed to be when you submerge your entire body into this powerful chemical? Sure, it’s not the same as direct exposure straight from the bottle, but the negative effects are nonetheless there.

The fact is that itchy skin from pool water can happen to anyone. This is because of the chlorine effect on skin. It strips away from the skin the natural oils that your body produces.

These are oils that are meant to keep the skin healthy and protected. Without them, the skin becomes dry and can even crack.

It’s also a cause of fine lines and wrinkles, meaning those who like to swim often, but don’t know or observe the rules for skin care for swimmers, are sure to end up looking older years before their time, even though swimming is a great form of exercise. All of this indicates that itchy skin from pool water may be the first sign to a more serious and long-lasting skin care problem.

Did You Know You Can Get Itchy Skin from Pool Water That’s Not Chlorinated?

The smart people who are privy to luxury at their own whim often think they can get away from negative effects through their own ingenious, but are frequently proven wrong. A lot of people know full well what the chlorine effect on skin is like, so they take to a saltwater swimming pool instead.

Sure, swimming in saltwater is much better for you than swimming in regularly chlorinated pool water, and there can even be some beneficial effects, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be safe from itchy skin from pool water. The truth is that even a saltwater swimming pool has chlorine in the water.

It’s just that the chlorine isn’t directly applied. Instead, the presence of the chemical in the pool water come from the salt that gets added.

So, swimming in saltwater can be just as drying, itch-causing, and you may still end up with a rash – although that’s not something those selling pool water conversions will be quick to tell you.

How to Swim in Chlorinated Pool Water and Not End Up with that Annoying Itch

There’s really only one solution for those who love to swim but hate getting itchy skin from pool water. They have to have a proper swimmer’s skin care routine.

It’s something that any swimmer should have anyway, no matter of the frequency by which they swim. It means doing more than just taking a shower after you get out of the pool, even though having that shower is a really good habit to have.

Proper skin care for swimmers starts before they even get into the pool, continues through their swimming session if it lasts for more than an hour, and keeps going even after they’re through swimming.
