How to Help Children With Dyslexia

Another common type of disability found in children today is Dyslexia, where children have the impairment related to learning. Before its diagnoses, children with dyslexic disability are rarely understood. Since, Dyslexia has nothing to do with a person’s intelligent, earlier, parents use to get perplexed when their child performed poorly in class or when their child was unable to keep space with his classmates, or even read a simple book. Parents blamed their child for their non performance.

Dyslexic Child mainly has problems with learning, reading and comprehension of written speech. Dyslexia Children have problems in processing information they see by looking at a word. Since, reading is the main aspect of learning, children with dyslexia are unable to master basic skills to succeed in schools. But, due to increasing awareness of dyslexia through media and social networks, parents are more aware and conscious and try to monitor their child’s performance in class.

A slow & late talker, problems in reading, writing, pronouncing words correctly, causing trouble in learning the connection between the words & their sounds, impaired ability to recall basic alphabets, colors, and numbers, confusing letters such as “b” and “d” or the orders of letters within words, poor handwriting, unable to keep space with the class, difficulty in remembering and recognizing numbers & letters, are some common sign & symptoms of children with dyslexia.

Diagnosing dyslexia in a child is real important. Without the correct diagnoses and treatment, dyslexia in children can lead to, non performance in school, frustration for both parents and child, child losing confidence leading to low self esteem. It is clear that dyslexia cannot be cured or prevented, but only an early diagnoses can manage the disability in a better manner with the help of support and instructions. Individual teaching is more beneficial compared to group learning. Dyslexic child can learn, but they need a different technique to learn. Using models and pictures help dyslexia children to grasp better.

Children with dyslexia should be provided full support of their parents and teachers. Parents are required to be in constant touch with the class teacher of dyslexic child to know his progress. Dyslexia children need regular encouragement and motivation by all. Extra help of reading & writing at home can help the child to improve his performance. It is always advisable to inform the child of his disability so that he can cope with it better. Joining support groups can also help in getting latest information on dyslexia.
