You will even sometimes forget that you are working out, because while you are enjoying the view as you are getting the best workout ever! Look down, below the surface, and you’ll see a view of underwater life. Look out toward the horizon and see views you could never see from land.

Stand up paddleboarding is an activity the whole family will enjoy. An initial investment in gear will yield many years of low-cost enjoyment of the great outdoors.

Gear up and standup! Though your initial investment may seem large, you’ll be pleased to know that there are no significant ongoing costs, once your board and paddle package is assembled.

The required equipment for standup paddleboarding includes:

  1. Stand up paddleboard – select a wider thicker board if you are just starting out. This will give you more stability.
  2. Paddle – The right paddle makes a world of difference in your stand up paddling experience.
  3. Leash – The leash keeps the board attached to you with a Velcro strap so the currents can’t sweep away your board, if you fall off.
  4. Traction pad – A traction pad promotes a good grip and padding on your paddleboard.
  5. Personal floatation device – A personal floatation devise is required by the US Coastguard if you will be paddling outside the limits of a swimming area.
  6. Proper clothing – Wear shorts and a T-shirt or bathing suit—something that moves with you and can get wet.
  7. Sun protection -Wear sunscreen, a rash guard and sunglasses.
The best way to start is to find a class that teaches standup paddleboarding and once you are comfortable enough to do it on your own, rent your gear from a reputable rental company and be sure to take the insurance, in case of an accident. Renting your gear will give you the opportunity to try out different types of gear before committing to making the investment in your own equipment and the insurance will save you from additional costs for damage or loss of the equipment.
