F/W Fashion Trends 2014-15

This season’s fashion is all about clean lines, cocoon silhouettes and androgyny. The main theme this season is wrapping your body up against the cold, which may sound quite obvious considering it is F/W fashion but if you keep reading you’ll see what I mean. Some trends are similar to last year’s F/W fashion, yet at the same time they are completely different. They have a new air to them, and they feel very trendy.

The androgynous trend remains in fashion and personally I think it is actually not so much a trend as it is the fashion rule of the 21 century. In other words, something permanent. After all, more and more we are bending the current unwritten rules on how we all should dress. Those rules have been more or less the same for the last three centuries and I believe their original purpose was to see to that we remain stereotypical men and women. But let’s be honest here, very few of us really are. I think the androgynous trend is absolutely fabulous. Rules are meant to be broken, bent and changed after all.

I loved last year’s F/W fashion but I love this year’s trends even more. The trends seem comfortable, chic and absolutely stunning all at the same time. This is especially impressive since it can be a tad harder to achieve this when one must also think about wrapping up warmly. I must say that this year the designers have more than proved it is doable.

Down here I have listed the trends.

  • All over knits

All over knits is a cosy and chic trend that works best in neutral tones. For inspiration look at Céline, Marc Jacobs and Stella McCartney.

  • Animal

Leopard print never goes out of style.

  • Aspen

The Seventies cult argyle sweater trend can be seen in collections by Louis Vuitton, Maison Martin Margiela and Tommy Hilfiger among others.

  • Capes

There are simplistic ones, feminine ones, androgynous ones and the ones that look like they came straight out of a fairytale. Whichever one you are going for, you’ll be in style. Have a look at Valentino and Dolce & Gabbana.

  • Duvet coats

I have got to get me one of these. A long, quilted cozy cocoon like coat that will keep you toasty warm and trendy at the same time. Look at the designs by Junya Watanabe, Kenzo and Chloé.

  • Eccentric Furs

My personal favourite. Eccentric furs with patchwork effects, flashes of vibrant colours and wild influences. Some designers that went for this trend this season were Alexander McQueen, Fendi, Roberto Cavalli, Chloé, Pucci and Versace. I must say I am not surprised however I am delighted. Those designers can pull it off, guaranteed.

  • Fairytales

I love this trend! The collections are dreamy, creative and imaginative. Think Little Red Riding Hood, Alice in Wonderland and Snow White. The silhouettes are gorgeous with delicate fabrics and fantastic embroidery. The models look like they walked out of a fairytale, thus the name of the trend. Dolce & Gabbana, Alexander McQueen and Valentino went for this trend.

  • Feathers

Haute Couture with ostrich feathers that flow lightly in the wind like the flutter of birds wings when you walk. Céline, Lanvin, Alexander McQueen among others were inspired by this trend.

  • Gold

The gold trend was seen in collections by Chloé, Prada and Saint Laurent among others.

  • Military Khaki

A fashion soldier, chic but ready for battle. Balmain, Vivienne Westwood and Isabel Marant.

  • Optical Monochrome

Hypnotic black and white patterns and optic illusions that somewhat reminds you of what you see when you look through a kaleidoscope. Interesting indeed.

  • Poncho

I am not talking about some hideous poncho that the gorgeous actress playing Ugly Betty was forced to wear during the series, but gorgeous, sophisticated and stylish ponchos that will turn heads. Some with fur hoods, some with monochromatic patterns and some hung nonchalantly over the shoulders like a blanket on a cold summer night. Check out Etro, Roberto Cavalli and Burberry Prorsum.

  • Raincoat

A chic waterproof parkas for winter precipitations.

  • Second skin

The shearling trend is big this year and already you can see shearling jackets in stores. If you are lucky you might be able to find one on sale right now and if you do I advice you to go get it. You’ll be saving money and you’ll be trendy and warm this fall and winter.

  • Sixties prints

This is a vintagey trend with prints from the 60s in a modern twist.

  • Sportswear

This trend I am not a big fan of. Athletic apparel used with heels and and made in both fleece as well as mesh fabrics.

  • Tailored androgyny

The look of having borrowed your boyfriend’s tailored suit combined with your own fabulous heels. Haider Ackermann, Hérmes and Stella McCartney did some great garments in this theme.

  • The sixties

Trapeze dresses, patent Mary-Janes, graphic bobs, mini-skirts and pastel colours are all part of a baby doll kind of look. For inspiration look at Gucci, Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton.

  • Black Velvet

Shimmering velvet used in androgynous pajama styled suits and dresses inspired by the 60s. Nina Ricci, Tom Ford and others went for this look.

  • XXL coats

Another one of my favourites. Oversized coats, meaning where 3/4 length coats are cut in a longer length. Some designers to look at are Dior, Céline, Miu Miu, Calvin Klein and Lanvin.

Conclusion

The trends this upcoming season is to get warm, wrap yourself up and go oversize with XXL coats, duvet coats, ponchos and capes. Knits are crucial this season and the longer and wider, the better. Add eccentric fur into your wardrobe as well as shearling jacket and a feather jacket/accessory. Go vintage shopping for some dresses and other apparel from the 60s or go designer for the same look. You can also look for vintage tailored designer suits for men and use them (perhaps with some alterations) with a pair of black heels, a fabulous Hermés scarf and a bag from Marc Jacobs. Find a fabulous raincoat and wear it regardless of the weather, perhaps paired with heels or ballerina flats and some athletic fashion. Let yourself live out the dream of becoming a princess with a fairytale dress by Alexander McQueen or Valentino. Or if you are more of the tomboyish kind, go military khaki with a jacket and trousers with a gold waist belt, gold earrings and a sexier version of army boots. For the black velvet fabric trend I suggest go designer or retail rather than vintage. The optical monochrome pattern can be used in many ways, such as on a dress with a pair of black plateau heels and an over sized coat, on a pair of high waist trousers or on a blouse with dark suit pants and black and white ballerina slippers.
