Five Romantic European Cities

The charms of cobbled streets, meandering rivers, criss crossed canals, historic buildings, ice cream and flower sellers all combine to conjure up images of  the following five romantic European cities and make them a ‘must see’ for honeymooners and lovers the world over.

Probably the quintessential and most popular romantic city in the world, Paris is the obvious choice when thinking of a romantic location.  Who could resist the charms of the Eiffel Tower by night or a romantic cruise along the River Seine to take in the stunning Notre Dame?  The capital of food, fashion and culture and the very epitome of chic invites us to stop a while with our loved one and sip wine at one of the outdoor cafes.  Stroll along the cobbled quays of Les Invalides or climb the Notre Dame Tower and take in panoramic views of a city which seems to have been touched by cupid himself.

With its historical significance, the Eternal City of Rome is high on the list of romantic destinations. Wander amongst the ancient ruins of the Colesseum.  Make a wish in the Trevi Fountain; discover the beautiful Piazza Navrone with the stunning Bernini Fountain and watch Italian youths on their scooters shouting ‘Ciao Bella’ at every attractive female.  When the sun goes down, climb the Spanish Steps or stroll up Janiculum Hill for spectacular views over the historic city and follow narrow winding streets until you find that perfect little restaurant.

Once one of the most affluent cities in Europe, Bruges is becoming increasingly popular for a romantic city break.  This well preserved medieval city is a maze of cobbled streets, gabled houses, ornate churches and peaceful canals.   Take a tour of the Half Moon Brewery, which has been family run for six generations, which ends on the rooftop with panoramic views of the whole city and tasters of all their special brews.   Head down to the Markt, the main square and sample moules frites and a few of the 350 beers on offer.

Romance and Venice are synonymous.  The crumbling beauty of this picturesque water locked city has unparalleled charm.  Forget the canals and head out on foot, winding your way through narrow streets, across tiny bridges and delight in discovering hidden squares and ornate palazzi. Sample the delectable gelati and take a water taxi to one of the neighbouring islands where you can stroll hand in hand along the quaint waterfronts.

Finally, since the fall of the Soviet Bloc, Budapest has attracted an increasing number of visitors who come to this beautiful city to experience the wonderful churches, art and thermal baths.  Straddling the River Danube this is a UNESCO listed site with Buda on one bank and Pest on the other.  Climb the ramparts of the fairy tale Fisherman’s Bastion in Buda to take in the whole panorama of the city or head to the Café Ruszwurm for real hot chocolate and cakes.  Stroll amongst flower filled parks and Japenese Gardens on Margret Island.
