Discovering the Secrets of Crete

If you’re planning on booking a holiday to the beautiful Greek island of Crete, you’ll probably fly into Heraklion Airport. Transfers from here to any of the main cities or beach towns are simple and it is breeze to get you to your accommodation in no time flat.

As the largest and most populated of the Greek islands, Crete is a popular destination for those who want a mix island life, history and beautiful beaches. As the once time centre of the Minoan civilisation, which dates back to 2700 BC, there is certainly no shortage of historically interesting things to do here once you have had your fill of the sun! No matter where you’ve booked your Heraklion airport transfers to take you, you will not be short of things to see and do. While you are on the island, make sure you make time to visit Malia and Chania.

Malia

For those who are already thinking of the fun in store once they land at Heraklion Airport, transfers to the party-capital of Malia can be just the ticket. Located on the central coast of the island, Malia is only about 35 miles east of the capital city. The ruins of many great palaces have been dated back to the Middle Bronze Age, and the current ruins of the Palace of Malia, which was rebuilt in the Later Bronze Age, are still visible in the Old Town. While the archaeological site of the old palace is important, perhaps even more exciting is the much older Minoan town that was built around the area of the castle. In addition to the historical interest in the city, it is also considered to be the heart of Cretan nightlife. With the majority of the after dark party spots located in the Old Town, the city of Malia lends an almost regal air to what is otherwise considered a busy tourist destination. That being said, people don’t flock here for just the nightlife; the beaches, lapped by the warm Mediterranean waters, are also stunning.

Chania

If the thought of going to a party city like Malia doesn’t appeal, you will be pleased to know that when you land at Heraklion Airport, transfers can also take you to places that are quieter and more conducive to a relaxing holiday. Chania is located on the northwestern coast of Crete and has been inhabited since the Neolithic Era. The Old Town of Chania is considered to be the most beautiful site on the entire island, and you can get wonderfully lost amidst the stunning streets with their mix of Turkish and Western architecture. If you are looking for a bit of beach time, Chania has it in spades, and as you stroll along the streets, you can pop into any of the many museums or historical buildings to explore.
