48 Hours in Riyadh

Capital of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh is one of the largest cities in the country. It covers a metropolitan area of 1825 square kilometers, most of which is dedicated to tall skyscrapers, foreign embassies and urbanized buildings. Riyadh has a massive population of over 5 million people, engaged in different occupations. It is an important business and administration center, being the capital of Riyadh Province and home to many international offices. A land of modern buildings and historical structures, Riyadh has a balanced lifestyle. Some of the oldest architectural masterpieces reflect brilliant Arabic artwork, commissioned by kings and rulers. Al Masmak castle and King Abdulaziz’s Murabba’ palace are classic examples of vernacular Arabian architecture. These old structures stand in contrast to contemporary, modern skyscrapers like the Kingdom Center and Al Faisaliyah Center. Nevertheless, both are part of the city’s tourist attractions.

The modern lifestyle has transformed the city into a major shopping center with numerous malls. Panorama Mall, Sahara Mall and Salam Mall are almost always crowded by city dwellers, shopping from a range of high end brands. The history of Riyadh, however, is still retained in its museums and galleries, that form the city’s attractions. King Abdul Aziz Historical Centre is the National Museum of Saudi Arabia, holding some of the richest artifacts combined with centuries of artistic knowledge.

Islam is the major religion followed in Riyadh. Many mosques are built amongst the urban offices to restore faith in the ancient religion. People here speak in a locally developed speech pattern known as Najdi dialect. English is quite popularly used for informal purposes. The culture of Riyadh is determined not only by its religion and people but also by their authentic cuisine. The Nejdi dish kabsa is the most traditional meal of the city, garnished with cashews, raisins and other dry fruits. It primarily consists of rice, meat and cooked vegetables. Mandi is another popular dish, originating from Yemen.

Climate of Riyadh is steadily hot and burning with temperatures rising to even 50 degree celsius between May and September. November to March is comparatively less hotter with little rainfall. Light cotton clothes are comfortable to travel in and help to beat the heat. December and January are the best months to visit.

Riyadh Flights are frequent and connect the city to international destinations like New York, Washington DC, London, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. They are inexpensive and are the most efficient means of transport to and from the city.
