Kim Kardashian Addresses Racism in New Essay

She may be in the midst of planning her wedding day with fiancé Kanye West, but Kim Kardashian also has some heavy thoughts on her mind these days.

In an open essay titled “On My Mind” that was posted on her website on Wednesday, Kardashian, 33, opens up about motherhood and her fears of raising her daughter in a world filled with racism.

“To be honest, before I had North, I never really gave racism or discrimination a lot of thought,” writes the reality star. “It is obviously a topic that Kanye is passionate about, but I guess it was easier for me to believe that it was someone else’s battle.”

But the new mom says recently, “I’ve read and personally experienced some incidents that have sickened me and made me take notice. I realize that racism and discrimination are still alive.”

One such incident could be the Vienna Ball in February. Kardashian reportedly stormed out of the event after she was approached by a man in blackface pretending to be her fiancé Kanye West.

After Kardashian and West’s recent Vogue cover, she said she was honored to be the first interracial couple to grace the storied magazine’s cover.

Writes Kardashian, “I feel a responsibility as a mother, a public figure, a human being, to do what I can to make sure that not only my child, but all children, don’t have to grow up in a world where they are judged by the color of their skin, or their gender, or their sexual orientation. So the first step I’m taking is to stop pretending like this isn’t my issue or my problem, because it is, it’s everyone’s.”
