Cashmere: It’s Time To Bring It Out Of Hibernation

Cashmere jumpers and cashmere cardigans are great for the winter months, but not so great for the summer. This is why a lot of your cashmere items go into storage over the warmer months. However, now is the time to start thinking about bringing them back out.

Autumn is here and winter is fast approaching with chilly winds and dull grey days. The leaves are turning gold and red, and are falling and gathering in leafy dunes all over. All you need to do is look out through your window and you’re reminded of those cold, blustery days from the past winter where all you done was snuggled in a nice warm jumper, and suddenly you get the urge to start all over again.

All across the country cashmere jumpers are being taken out of storage and are being prepared for the coming cold months. And it’s not just cashmere jumpers. Accessories such as cashmere scarves and hats are also being woken, as well as gloves and wristwarmers. Proud owners are being reminded of their qualities and their luxuries and are excited about feeling their cosy warmth against their skin once again.

But what is expected to be a happy occasion can sometimes be disastrous for some. This is the time when people discover that their beloved cashmere has been eaten by moths, that while it was stored away, these little critters found a way in and have lived happily among the fibres, eating their way through all summer long. What once was a luxurious, expensive cashmere jumper is now a holey rag.

What do you do?

Don’t despair. Many Cashmere mills keep stock of yarn in previous season’s colours. This means you can easily get your hands on some and repair your jumper, restoring it back to its original beauty. It may be that you have to repair these yourself or find someone else to do this as many mills don’t offer a repair service due to the risk of introducing moths, but when they do you’ll be glad to have your old winter faithful back.

But the chances are if you stored your cashmere jumper in a good quality zip bag, it would have survived the summer months intact and once again be able to become a winter favourite. So now, with the colder weather approaching fast, the perfect time to resurrect your cashmere jumper – or even your faithful cashmere accessories such as scarves, gloves and hats – is upon us, and you can look forward to winter with a confident smile on your face.
