Drew Barrymore Launches Three Fragrances: ‘I’m Not the Same Person Every Day … and I Celebrate That About Myself’

Drew Barrymore‘s beauty empire keeps expanding, and she couldn’t be happier about it. And that’s not just a figure of speech: The actress and mom of two is endlessly effusive about her Flower Beauty line, which is growing to include three new fragrances: Cherished, Radiant and Sultry.

Barrymore anticipates you rolling your eyes at another celebrity fragrance — and says no one was more skeptical about it than she was at first. “I have been asked to do a celebrity fragrance for 20 years, and I always said no, because I was completely convinced there would be nothing authentic about me in a like a sensual setting trying to promote this fabulous fragrance,” she said at an event for her fragrance launch earlier this year. “I didn’t feel like that was who I was. I was like, ‘It won’t work, I know it won’t work.’”

So what changed her mind? A seven-year stint at CoverGirl, where she left with what she called “a college degree in beauty” — and the desire to start her own cosmetics line. “This is the opposite of the celebrity brand. It’s a beauty brand. We’d love our own children to run it one day if we earn that right. We are about women for women,” she said. “I got excited about doing a fragrance, because it was a natural progression in the Flower Beauty brand. The thing that got me the most excited about it was the potential story behind it.”

That story is one of a day in a woman’s told through the three fragrances, because, as Barrymore says, “I’m not the same person every day and I don’t wear the same thing every day. And I celebrate that about myself. I’m inconsistent, but there are things that I like. I loved the idea of there being someone I feel in one moment and something I feel on a different day.”

Cherished, which smells of cassis and vanilla, represents “the idea about when you wake up in the morning and you wake up in the beautiful chaos of your home and it’s messy and wonderful … We talked about he words nuzzle and enveloping. We loved the nuzzle-y quality, it’s affection,” Barrymore said, choking up a bit when she talked about her daughters being “the best thing I ever did with my life.”

Radiant, with notes of wet woods and dewy greens, is for once you’ve gotten your day started: “It makes you feel fresh and empowered and beautiful, [you’re] started on your new path.” Finally, Sultry (plum and night-blooming jasmine) is what you wear “once you had a great long day and you’ve done everything you can and you check every box and you try to be a good mom and do good at your job,” Barrymore said. “There might be room for romance and something sexy … to not forget about that aspect of celebrating the woman that you are.”

Flower Beauty scents will be available at Walmart in early October, but in the meantime, you can practice spritzing like Drew, who tells PEOPLE, “I’m pretty simple — just a little on the wrist and a dab behind the ears. But when it comes to patchouli, I could bathe in patchouli.”
