Choosing the Right Hair Color for Your Skin and Eye Color

We often wish to change our hair color but are afraid of choosing the wrong color or the dye turning into a flop. Hopefully I’ll be able to help you so that you never have to go through that again. Firstly, you must know your hair type, then you must create a picture in your mind of what you want your hair to look like after coloring it, and only then will you be able to make a good decision about which color to use.

Before you going to the hair salon, consider these factors, as they will help you achieve the look you have in mind:

Have a look at the picture you have in mind, and ask yourself: Do you want all your hair dyed a solid, one color, or would you like multiple tones?

A straight forward, one color is known as monochromatic color, and numerous different colors are known as getting highlights or low lights.

Highlights are a way of brightening up your base color, they are applied mostly on the top of your head and around your face to frame and brighten it.

Low lights are applied in darker shades than your base color, adding depth to your hair, making it look fuller when put on the bottom layers of your hair. The benefit of having highlights or low lights done is that it looks more natural, and you don’t have the problem of outgrowth where your old color grows through.

Another option to dying your hair is to add bright color highlights, popular colors are blue, pink, purple, yellow, green etc, but I don’t advise those colors if you work in a professional firm.

Choosing a color that suits you:

Select a color that compliments your skin and eye color can looks natural. Red and coppers colors are very popular, but a downside is that they tend to fade, so regular touch ups are required for these colors. Darker skin tones should use rich brown and red colors and darker low lights.

Golden skin tones should use dark reds and auburns, and avoid bright yellows, oranges and bright golds.

Pink or fair skin should wear ashes, honeys and neutral colors.

You should also lighten your hair color as you get older to combine gray hairs into the color and thus avoid having dying your hair too regularly. Permanent or non-permanent hair color?

If you are unsure about a color, a good way to test if you like it and see if it suits you is to use a semi permanent hair color or color rinse. You can easily apply these at home, all you have to do is apply the color, wait for the recommenced time for the dye to set, then shampoo and condition as normal. These dyes are more user-friendly than old home hair coloring kits.

Should I dye my own hair or go to a stylist?

This is the final decision you have to make. The advantage to going to a hair stylist is that they can suggest colors and can style your hair while you’re there. And the advantage of doing your own hair at home is that you can do it at whatever time you choose.

Choosing a hair color based on the look you’re going for, your hair type and skin tone, you’ll attain the look you want. If you’re seeking a more skilled look, a slight color change would be suitable. But if you’re looking for something drastic and want to be creative, don’t be afraid to try a color that’s out of your comfort range
