Easy Guide to Prevent Diabetic Feet

Due to different factors like poor ciruclation, infections, and nerve damage, people with diabetes often experience health problems involving the feet. Today, it is estimated that around one out of five diabetics will develop major foot complications.

In people with uncontrolled blood sugar levels, it often takes a long time for the wounds to heal. Sometimes, even small cuts and sores can become dangerously infected because are often disregarded.  Thus, diabetics should be extra vigilant when it comes to foot care. Below is an easy guide to care for the feet and prevent foot problems.

Having diabetes means having to take the time to take care of the feet daily. Every single day, one should check for small cuts, calluses, blisters, or scrapes that may be present on the foot. It is also suggested to have someone look at the bottom of your feet to be sure that all areas are checked. A magnifying glass may also be useful in these cases.

Check for dry or cracked skin.

Keep the feet clean by lightly scrubbing with a soft washcloth dipped in lukewarm water.  Washing with hot water and harsh soaps can damage the skin. Dry the area between the toes thoroughly, patting dry and being careful not to rub. Infections and fungal growth tend to develop in moist areas, so make sure to keep the feet dry. Then, apply a thin layer of lotion at the top and bottom areas of the feet, never between the toes.

Avoid walking barefoot especially in sandy beaches or on hot pavements.

Do not attempt to remove any foot lesions yourself. See your podiatrist instead of using chemicals, callus removers, razors, and corn plasters.

Trim the toenails straight across rather than in a curved fashion to prevent ingrown growth. Be careful not to cut them too short. Also, it is best to trim the nails after washing the feet, when the toenails are soft. If your nails are thick or yellowed, consult a foot doctor.

Wear comfortable and well-fitting shoes that are neither too tight nor too loose. Choose those that are made of suede, canvas, leather, or other breathable materials. Avoid sandals, flip flops, those made from plastic, high heels, open toe shoes, and pointed-toe shoes.

Smoking any form of tobacco can accelerate damage to blood vessels, particularly the small blood vessels. This leads to poor circulation, which is a major risk factor in developing foot infections.

Diabetes control is a very important aspect of foot care. Take your medications, eat a proper diet, check blood sugar regularly, and go for regular consult with your physician.
