Potato Wedges Vs French Fries As a Side Dish

We all love potatoes and who would have thought that this bulb could be so versatile and tasty. When it comes to take-away meals, in most cases you may have choice of either potato wedges or French fries. I must admit that both options are quite tasty for me. But which option should I go for?

Let’s look at the benefits of each one. Potato wedges are the seemingly healthier option because it uses less oil. You only line the base of the baking tray with some sunflower oil and drizzle a little bit of oil over it to give it that wonderful golden brown colour and crispy texture during baking. On the downside, it does take a bit longer to bake the wedges. You could cut them up and place them directly into the oven. This means that it will take anything from an hour to bake the wedges properly. Alternatively, you could boil the wedges the first then place them in the baking tray and into the oven. This is a lengthy (and now a two-step) process.

Then you have the formidable and tasty French fry. You can slice your French fries into thin strips if you like or thicker chunkier strips. Boil sunflower oil which is a good heat retainer then dunk the potato strips into the frying oil. Depending on how you like it, you can fry it until it is crispy and golden brown or you can fry it so that it’s a nice soft French fry. I find the softer version of the French fry to be quite delectable, especially when you drizzle some vinegar and salt over it. The downside to French fries is the abundant use of oil. However, once you strain the French fries, place them in a bowl that is lined with a disposable kitchen towel. This will drain much of the oil. On the upside, the frying time for French fries can be as quick as five minutes. So if you’re in hurry, this is the way to go.

Now that I’ve looked at the arguments of both sides, I must conclude this to be a draw. I find that certain occasions may call for potato wedges and others for French fries, depending on both your mood and your time schedule. Each side dish has its advantages and disadvantages. As long as you find a good balance both options will be tasty additions to your meal. Enjoy your side dish.
