Tips for Cooking Healthy and Delicious Mexican Food at Home

Everyone loves Mexican food for its rich and diverse flavors. At the same time, the most popular Mexican dishes like burritos and tacos have got bad reputation for containing lots of fat and having a high calorie count. The reality is that the cuisine of this country is one of the healthiest in the world, in addition to being super tasty. Get back to the roots of the traditional cuisine and learn how to prepare amazing dishes which are healthy and full of flavor.

Make your own tortillas.

This may seem like a lot of extra work during the preparation of Mexican food, but it is not. More importantly, it is worth the effort since the tortillas which you buy in the store are often full of fat. You need to buy masa which is the original flour ingredient for making this type of bread. It is much healthier and more delicious compared to ground corn. It is easy to make the dough for the tortillas and to prepare them in a pan over high heat. If you want to make hard taco shells, you can use a special technique which involves moistening the tortillas a bit and baking them in the oven.

Drop frying and embrace grilling and stewing.

In traditional Mexican cuisine, the meat is grilled or stewed and not fried. You can readily opt out of frying beef mince and grill shredded chicken breast instead. If you want to make the chicken breast even more flavorsome, you can place them in marinade for about half a day before grilling. If you have to cook shredded beef with a little bit of fat, you should go for slow cooking in a skillet. That way, all the fat will be released and you will be able to remove it with the use of a spoon. Generally, you can use more beans and less meat when cooking. Beans are traditional for this cuisine. They are super delicious and contain healthy protein and carbs.

Replace cheese with more delicious salsa and guacamole.

Cheese is not a common ingredient in Mexican food, despite the common misconception. At the same time, it is the main source of fat in the popular recipes prepared today. The good news is that you can add a bit more salsa and guacamole to make up for the lack of cheese. You can readily make guacamole creamier to compensate for the creaminess of melted cheese. You can dry roast the chili peppers and the onions which you put in the salsa sauce to make it even more aromatic and delicious.

Use more chili peppers, herbs and spices for outstanding flavor.

It has been scientifically proven that chili peppers stimulate fat burning and weight loss and lower cholesterol levels. You will certainly benefit from adding more of these to your Mexican food. Just remember to use fresh chili peppers instead of readymade sauces. Make sure that you stock on the traditional herbs and spices in this cuisine and use them as recommended in the recipes. The list includes oregano, cilantro, cumin, cloves, allspice, garlic and cinnamon. These will add great flavor and aroma to your dishes without any extra calories.

You are now ready for cooking outstanding Mexican food.
