Stay Cool: Top 5 Summer Makeup Tips

Warm weather, blooming flowers and pool parties are a few things I love about Summer. Want to hear what makes me cringe? My fall and winter makeup routine, which cannot be used during the summer.

Oil based foundations, eyes shadows, mascara and liners often melt during the middle of the day. Does this mean I should stop wearing make-up all together? Sometimes I do (it’s a nice reprieve for your skin). But on days I wear make up, I keep it light, stay cool and follow these five Summer makeup tips.

The “No Makeup” Makeup Routine

Let’s start things off with an appropriate cliche: less is more.

If you wear little to no makeup in the summer, your skin will thank you with a healthy glow come fall. Here is what I suggest: on some days, just don’t wear make-up. On those “Let’s be real, I have to wear makeup” days, try this routine:

1. Tinted Moisturizer

  • This way, you get some cover and moisture.

2. Concealer

  • For acne scars and blemishes your tinted moisturizer won’t hide, gently so the concealer.

3. Bronzer

  • Contour your face with a natural bronzer, but only apply it to the areas where the sun naturally hits your skin.

Many women have benefited from this minimal routine. I bet you will, too.

Wear Mineral Foundation

We sweat and play hard during the summer. Sweat + dirt = clogged pores, acne, and sometimes hyper pigmentation. Liquid and cream foundations generally aggravate this problem; so swap them with mineral foundation. When you find mineral foundation with natural and inorganic ingredients, it won’t create bacteria. It also wears well in the heat.

Apply a gentle amount of oil-free moisturizer and primer to your face, then follow up with your mineral foundation. If you’re “heavy handed”, try to revise that technique during the summer. We don’t want it to look cakey, or clog pores.

Buy SPF (oil free!) Moisturizers

I always change my moisturizer in the summer. When looking for moisturizers on hot, sticky days, I look for two labels:

1. SPF 15

2. Oil Gree

The skin on our face is gentle and prone to wrinkles, which is why we protect it with SPF during the summer. Look out for SPF 15 moisturizers, and make sure they’re oil free.

Psst: Don’t forget to apply sunblock to the rest of your body. As a general rule, sunblock is the only thing you should apply heavily during summer.

Two Summer Mascara Tips

Oh mascara. I love you, but when temperatures rise, you make me look like a raccoon.

Here’s what you do to avoid “raccoon eyes”.

1. Curl your eyelashes to lengthen them and pull them away from your face.
2. Apply a thin layer of waterproof mascara.

Replace Make-up with Coconut Oil

Go a few days without makeup, and use coconut oil instead. Make-up artists recommend coconut oil because not only does it nourish your skin, but provides a natural glow. So right after your shower, apply a gentle layer of coconut oil over your face and go au naturale. Do I have to mention that you don’t need a moisturizer afterwards? Well, you don’t.
