Miley Cyrus: I Wanted to Leave Liam Back on Valentine’s Day

It was a heartbreaking year for Miley Cyrus as her relationship with Liam Hemsworth crumbled. And no single day was tougher, perhaps, than Valentine’s Day.

That’s the day she wrote “Drive,” a breakup song that’s on her upcoming album Bangerz. The breakup wouldn’t happen for a few more months, but Cyrus, 20, knew it was coming.

“I wrote it while I was working on Valentine’s Day – emotionally it was such a hard time,” the pop star tells Fashion magazine’s November issue, on newsstands Oct. 7.

The song’s lyrics include the lines, “We can just drive away from my troubles/Drive far away where no one can find us.”

Cyrus explains: “It is about needing to leave someone but not really wanting to completely cut yourself off from the relationship. It’s a time when you want to leave but you can’t. It’s also about moving on.”

Cyrus is more upbeat elsewhere in the interview, in particular while reiterating how proud she is of her provocative performance at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. “I was hoping some would think, ‘Miley may be out there shaking her ass and having fun but she’s got some intelligence,’ ” she says.

She also claims that fashion is what separates her from her rivals.

“I have a very specific style of my own, and I think it is better to be stylish than trendy,” she says. “I find vintage Celine or Chanel and mix it with athletic or vintage pieces makes a look modern and fresh. Vintage makes everything look punk.”
