How To Clean Your Clutches And Handbags

When you have a handbag or purse that you really love, you want to keep it looking as beautiful as it was the day you received it for as long as possible. Even though you may take great care in keeping your purse clean, they somehow find a way to pick up germs, dust and spots. The bottom of your purse has been shown to carry the highest level of bacteria, and with good reason. It comes in contact with tables, floors, shopping carts, and your gym locker. The best way to keep your bag from picking up superfluous germs is to be careful where you set it. First of all, never set your purse on any floor at any time, especially the bathroom floor. At a restaurant, hang your purse from your chair or set it on another seat next to you. Place it on the seat next to you in the car. These tips will help to keep germs off your bag, but what is the best way to clean your purse? That depends on the type of handbags you own.

Plastic, vinyl or leather purses: Wipe clean with a disinfecting wipe.

Leather bags: These are a little more complicated. It is recommended that you use a specialized leather cleaner and a soft cloth. Follow the instructions on the bottle. As with all cleaners and stain removers, make sure you test on an inconspicuous spot to make sure it will not discolor, stain or spot your bag.

Cotton bags: Luckily, most bags of this type can be laundered in a washing machine. Because hot water can fade the colors and dyes, place your purse in the freezer overnight to first kill germs, then launder in cold water in a gentle cycle. Depending on the build of your purse, it may be best to hang dry instead of placing it in the dryer.

To clean the inside of your purse is a little more complicated. First, empty the contents of your bag and shake out any dirt, dust, crumbs or debris that may have collected. Remember to open and shake out any interior pockets. You can use a small vacuum to get rid of any stubborn bits of dust and dirt.

Continue keeping the interior of your purse clean by keeping your makeup in a separate makeup bag, placing candy or snacks inside a plastic bag, and making sure that lotions or sanitizing gels are properly closed before placing them inside.
