Can You Freeze Cooked Rice?

Many people eat rice as a staple food. However, it takes a long time to cook it. In some instances, cooking time takes around 45 minutes, but it can also take a full hour. If you are busy person, you may not have enough time to wait that long. The question is can you freeze cooked rice? Luckily, the answer is yes. You can cook as much rice as you can and have it frozen for future use.

The process is simple. Cook as much rice as you want. When it’s done, let it cool a bit. Do not attempt to place hot rice in the fridge. Let the heat dissipate for a few minutes, but never let it cool down too much to make sure that the rice retains most of the water. While it is still quite warm, divide the rice into several meal-size portions and place each portion carefully into a freezer bag or plastic container.

Before you place the rice in the freezer, make sure to squeeze extra air out of the bags to conserve space. In addition, flatten the bag to make it easier to thaw the frozen rice later. Remember that dividing the rice into meal-size portions is vital because once you reheat the rice, you cannot freeze it again. As soon as frozen rice gets reheated, it has to be consumed. Whatever is left should be thrown away because freezing and reheating it may cause food poisoning. Hence, you have to divide the portions according to how much you can consume in one meal.

You freeze cooked rice because you want to save time. Hence, you want to defrost it quickly as well. This can be done by using a microwave oven. For people who do not want to microwave their food, there are other methods.

Open the faucet and let tap water run through the surface of the freezer bag until the rice is thawed. Do not use hot water because it will only cook the rice on the outer part, but will still leave the inner part chilled. Another method is to put the freezer bag directly into boiling water for about 5 to 10 minutes until the rice is completely defrosted and warmed.

Freezing cooked rice is a completely safe procedure. Just remember that after it has been defrosted and reheated, you have to consume it and get rid of whatever is left.
