The Top 5 Beaches in Tenerife, Canary Islands

The largest and arguably the most popular of all the Canary Islands, Tenerife sits off the coast of Morocco and is bathed in virtually year round sunshine.  With beaches varying from fine golden sand, to black volcanic sand to pebbles you will find a beach that is just perfect for you.

Here’s a list of the top 5 beaches in Tenerife, check them out the next time you visit.

Playa de las Teresitas

Situated on the north of the island, the 1.5km stretch of golden sand is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island.  Sitting below the Anaga Mountains, 7km outside of Santa Cruz it’s popular with both locals and tourists alike. With sand from the Sahara and a breakwater 500metres off the coast, this is the perfect location for family days at the seaside.  Its shallow waters make it ideal for young children, its volleyball courts offer fun for older kids and the beautiful soft sand and gentle waves make it a paradise for sun worshippers.

El Medano

This 2km long beachfront resort in the south of the island boasts the longest beach on the island. It’s very popular with both locals and tourists especially as one end of the beach, with its calm waters, is suitable for families and the other – well – with awesome waves it’s a surfers’ dream and World Cup championships for both kitesurfing and windsurfing are held here.   Surrounded by a protected nature reserve it is also backed by a long promenade filled with restaurants, bars and shops.  So everything you need for a day out is all close at hand.

Los Cristianos

With its fine sand and tranquil turquoise waters, the beach at Los Cristianos is definitely amongst the top beaches in Tenerife.   It is a fantastic family destination where you can indulge in sunbathing, fishing and water sports to your heart’s content.  With a very large, shallow calm area of sea it is especially suitable for young children.  Why not take a trip on a glass bottomed boat and see what the world under the sea has to offer?

Playa Jardin

This picturesque beach at Puerto de la Cruz is pure black volcanic sand with a fringe of lush vegetation.  Edged in gardens of palms, figs, exotic hibiscus and fragrant frangipani this is an elegant and charming beach which is popular with both surfers and swimmers.  Relax on the beach and soak up, not only the sun, but the spectacular view of Mount Teide.

El Puertito

And finally, a well kept secret.  If it’s peace and tranquillity you are seeking, just outside Playa de las Americas is the black beach of El Puertito.  Nestling in the bay of a sleepy fishing village it is a secluded area popular with divers.  Explore the cave dwelling built into the rocks or enjoy a relaxed lunch in one of the small fish restaurants.
