Surprise! Katie Holmes Does Her Own Hair All the Time

Katie Holmes opens up about starting over, her life as a single mom and finding love again.

PEOPLE’s Executive Editor Kate Coyne interviewed Katie Holmes for this week’s cover story, and of course she asked the question everyone’s dying to know. No, not “What’s Suri’s Favorite Clothing Store?,” although we’re still curious about that. She asked the secret behind Katie’s amazing hair. Below, Coyne reveals her findings.

I’ll confess that when I went to interview Katie Holmes last week, I knew a lot about her upcoming film projects, but very little about her beauty endorsement deals. I’d heard she was the new Global Brand Ambassador for Olay skincare (with skin like hers, it’s no surprise), but I thought that was the extent of it.

But when I met Katie in person, it wasn’t just her impossibly radiant skin — yes, at 35, she uses Olay — that I noticed. Instead, what really stood out was her hair. She has, no kidding, PERFECT hair. The kind of hair you would normally hate someone for having — thick, lustrous, straight-but-not-flat, shiny-but-not-limp, simply gorgeous hair. It was hard not to stare.

When I learned that Katie’s hair was thanks to the other beauty deal she’s struck in the past year — as co-owner and spokesperson for Alterna, an all-organic line of hair care products — I stopped being envious and started asking questions. Specifically, which products had she used that day, and would they do the same for me?

“I swear by the CC cream,” she said, referencing the brand’s multi-purpose product. The “Complete Correction” cream treats, protects and styles hair with ten benefits in one versatile formula from high-shine to moisture and UV protection. I’m pretty sure it will also take you to dinner and a movie if you ask nicely. It’s that good.

Then Katie explained that once she’s let the CC cream work its magic, she has another secret weapon to extend her perfect hair day into a second 24 hours. “Let’s be honest, most days I’m not going to go and get a blow-out. Forget it,” she said. Instead, she reaches for Alterna’s Bamboo Style Cleanse Extend Dry Shampoo. It’s basically the love child of a dry shampoo and a texturizing spray — it goes on clear but absorbs oil and product build-up with no powdery residue, and adds unbelievable volume to hair that would otherwise be going limp.

I snagged a bottle that afternoon, and sprayed it on the next morning. That’s when I discovered the other hidden benefit of this mist. I had thought Katie smelled amazing that afternoon because of some rare and expensive fragrance I assumed she was wearing. Nope. It was this stuff — which comes in a scent Alterna calls “Sugar Lemon.” With a name like that it probably tastes as good as it smells.
