Microdermabrasion – What Is It, Is It Right For Me?

How do you get the smoother, softer, brighter skin that you have been searching for? Microdermabrasion!

What is Microdermabrasion you ask? It’s a simple, nonsurgical, professional procedure, that delivers fast/noticeable results. It’s quick and best of all, it’s painless! It is an effective alternative to more costly treatments (plastic surgery, chemical peel, Botox). Microdermabrasion can be performed in a doctor’s office, by a dermatologist, or in a salon/spa by a licensed esthetician.

Microdermabrasion is an advanced form of exfoliation. It deep cleans your pores, removing the top layer of dead skin cells. It can be performed on the face, chest, neck, hands, or arms. It helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles, creases, and fine lines, as well as brighten your complexion for a more youthful look. It can help erase sun damage and minor scars. Your skin will feel soft and smooth!

How do you know if microdermabrasion is right for you? Microdermabrasion is for both women and men, and can be performed on any skin type or complexion, however a doctor should be consulted if you have any of the following conditions:

  • acne
  • eczema
  • psoriasis
  • rosacea

At the start of the treatment, your doctor or esthetician will cleanse and defat your skin. This will remove any makeup or dirt, as well as oils, to prepare your skin for the treatment. Your doctor or esthetician will then use an electronic device (devices vary by doctor’s office or salon/spa) which abrates the top layer (epidermis) of your skin (by either spraying crystals or “sanding” with a diamond tip), loosening the dead skin cells. The device will simultaneously suction up the crystals and dead skin.

A bonus of microdermabrasion? Your products will all penetrate better! You will get more bang for your buck.

Microdermabrasion is painless and only takes about 30 minutes. Your skin will look slightly pink or red after the treatment. This “flushed” look will be gone within 24 hours. Following the treatment, it is important to keep your skin moisturized and protected from the sun.

Microdermabrasion can be performed once per week, but most people like to space it out a little further. It is recommended to have microdermabrasion at least once per quarter, at the change of seasons.

If microdermabrasion doesn’t sound like it is for you, there are alternatives. Microdermabrasion paste, cleansing cloths, and other similar products are available at drugstores. They will have a similar exfoliating effect, but nothing is as good as a professional microdermabrasion.
