Hair Styles for Women Over 50

Age has little to do with a good hairstyle, but the reality is what worked when we were in our 40’s just doesn’t look as good now as it did then.

Dry, limp, or thinning hair are common problems for women over 50 and often they decide to go for a short hairstyle just for the sake of simplicity. In some cases, this isn’t a bad idea as it will divert attention away from the hair and to the face… but use caution; the wrong cut can age you badly. If you opt for short hair, a bob with a side swept fringe (bangs) will not only suit your hair but is also good camouflage for wrinkled foreheads. And a short style allows for easy maintenance, as it only needs a quick blow-dry after washing.

Shoulder length styles for mid-life women may work well; you’ll have a choice of wearing it pulled up, tied back or wearing it down.

Layers will help make the hair look a little thicker; especially if you go for a body wave perm. Or you could opt to keep your hair one length if you have under layers (layers which are cut under the top layer of hair which is all one length); this style will make the hair look thicker and it will provide more body.

Concealing the Droopy Jaw Line

Let’s face it ladies, gravity is leaving it’s mark on our faces. If you style your hair slightly shorter around the face in layers, it will soften your facial features and do more to hide a gravitationally challenged jaw line. Although it may sound like a bad “Charlie’s Angels” hair day, styling your hair with a round brush, sweeping away from your face instantly adds a lift to your jaw line. (Trust me, it works.)

The spiky look simply doesn’t work well on jowls… instead you’ll want to go for longer layers and avoid the “too-styled” look.

Hide the Chicken Neck

Oh dear! The saggy, baggy, chicken skin, red-neck syndrome is sure to add years to your appearance; hide it, camouflage it, and conceal it!

If you have a droopy or double chin, wear your hair close around your face as a camouflage and wear it to the jaw line.

If you’re fortunate enough to still have a well-formed neck and delicate features, you’ll look great with a short style.

A short or cropped style will help make a short neck look longer, as will long hair piled on top of the head.

Tips for Longer Hair

Long hair doesn’t always work as you age; something to do with gravity. If you can’t bear to cut your locks, have it layered because it will give you an instant face-lift, and make sure it doesn’t fall lower than your cleavage.

Final Word

Fringe (bangs) work well to conceal a wrinkled forehead and frown lines. A soft, feathered look framed around the face will help hide laughter lines-if you really want to conceal them. However, laughter lines, I believe, deserve to be worn with pride!
